Language here is not a service detail but part of the country's character. French is the official language and governs documents, paperwork and formal dealings. Alongside it, Kikongo, Lingala, Tshiluba and Swahili are recognised, each with its own geographic and social territory. In practice a Gulf traveller will work in French for anything official and hear something else entirely in the street, the market and shared transport. Expecting that in advance prevents more misunderstandings than any translation app will.
