Yamoussoukro is the political capital of Cote d Ivoire, and reading it as a capital first explains almost everything about how it feels on the ground: the scale, the distances between things, and the sense that the city was arranged rather than accumulated.
Four entities structure the guide. The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace is the entry point for most visitors and the one that dictates how a day is planned. The Felix Houphouet-Boigny Foundation carries the institutional and intellectual weight. Crocodile Lake is the short, memorable stop that sits close to the civic core. The Presidential Palace exterior is treated exactly as named here, as an exterior, which is the correct expectation to arrive with.
For stays, three approved areas are compared: Centre-ville, Dioulakro and Assabou. The method used throughout is to link each area to the sights nearest it, so the choice becomes itinerary-led rather than abstract. Centre-ville keeps the civic anchors within short reach; Dioulakro and Assabou shift the balance toward a quieter base at the cost of a little movement each day.
