Uzbekistan
3 selected citiesAbout Uzbekistan
Three Uzbek cities, three gateway airports and three distinct rhythms: how to choose between them, where to base yourself, and what to confirm officially before booking.
Before you go
One item belongs above everything else, ahead of flights, hotels and the shape of your days. Entry requirements for Uzbekistan depend on your nationality, the documents you hold and the date you travel, and they have to be confirmed through the official channel rather than inferred from a forum post or a traveller who came through two seasons ago. Check them the week you book and again the week you fly. That single habit prevents the large majority of avoidable problems at the border, and it costs about four minutes.

How to read Bukhara
Treat the city as a set of workable clusters, not a checklist. The recorded visitor anchors are Poi Kalyan Ensemble, Ark Of Bukhara, Lyabi Hauz Ensemble, Samanid Mausoleum. Group them by location and pace so the day remains usable rather than becoming a sequence of transfers.
Build the visiting day
Protect one primary experience in each half-day, then add a nearby stop with a different purpose. Leave room for meals and recovery, and recheck opening or booking details through the official source before execution. A good plan protects the reason for visiting instead of filling every minute.
Match the plan to the traveller
Families should prioritise access, seating and a simple return. Couples may protect an unhurried evening. Solo travellers should treat connectivity and the route back as part of the decision. The useful answer changes with the traveller rather than with a universal ranking.

Checks before booking
Verify the exact address, real walking distance to transport or meeting points, cancellation terms, room type and whether taxes or fees are visible. Hotel prices and availability are live commercial facts, so this guide does not freeze a rate or permanent ranking.

Samarkand
Why visit Samarkand?
Samarkand carries the country's reputation, and it holds up. The editorial map divides into three approved areas — Registan District, Old City Samarkand and University Boulevard — three bases with genuinely different characters rather than three labels for the same handful of streets. Registan Square is the obvious centre of gravity and the reason most itineraries exist at all; it repays two visits rather than one, in daylight and again after dark. Shah-i-Zinda is the quieter counterweight, a corridor of tombs that rewards patience and an early start more than any other site in the city. Gur-e-Amir is compact enough to fold into a single morning without unbalancing the day, and Bibi-Khanym Mosque sits close enough to the old commercial core that it joins a walk naturally instead of demanding a trip of its own.
The smartest planning move here is to stop thinking in hotel categories and start thinking in walking distance. Linking each area to the sights nearest to it supports a far better stay decision than any star rating, because it quietly determines how many times a day you cross the city. Samarkand International Airport (SKD) is the approved arrival gateway for this destination, and the official airport source publishes passenger and access information for it — worth reading once before you assume a particular arrival time works with whatever you had planned for your first night.

Tashkent
Why visit Tashkent?
Tashkent is the practical beginning of an Uzbekistan trip and a considerably better city than its passing reputation suggests. Three approved areas carry the editorial map here — Amir Temur Square, Chorsu and City Centre Tashkent — and they sit close enough together that choosing between them is a question of atmosphere rather than logistics. Chorsu Bazaar anchors the old commercial quarter and is the one place where the city's food culture is on open display; arrive early and arrive hungry. The State Museum of History of Uzbekistan gives the chronology a shape you will carry with you into Samarkand and Bukhara, which is the argument for visiting it on day one instead of day four. The Hazrati Imam Complex handles the religious and scholarly side of the story with far less crowding than its equivalents elsewhere in the country, and repays a slow hour rather than a quick lap. And the Tashkent Metro is a genuine special case: it moves people, obviously, but it belongs on the sightseeing list rather than the transport list, because the stations were built to be looked at.
Tashkent International Airport (TAS) is the approved arrival gateway for this destination, and the official airport source publishes passenger and access information for it — the right place to confirm details before you book any transfer. For everything below that, meaning how the three areas actually connect on the ground, the official transport source is the basis for comparing access between Tashkent's districts, and it is worth opening before you fix a base rather than afterwards.
01 Explore the citySights, experiences and the character of the city
Tashkent works best when you accept it has two personalities rather than one checklist: the walled old city around Chorsu Bazaar and Khast Imam for pre-Soviet heritage, and the wide boulevards around Amir Timur Square for its 20th-century capital identity. Ride the ornate metro between them. Visit April–May or September–October, when heat is manageable and walking stays comfortable.
Old City or New City: Where to Spend Your Time
Tashkent doesn't offer one obvious set of landmarks — it offers two competing versions of the city, and how you split your time between them matters more than any single stop. The old city, clustered around Chorsu Bazaar's blue-domed market hall and the Khast Imam complex (mosques, madrasahs, and a library holding one of the world's oldest Quran manuscripts), is where Tashkent still looks pre-20th-century. A few kilometres south, Amir Timur Square and Independence Square anchor the other Tashkent: broad Soviet-era boulevards and monumental architecture built largely after the 1966 earthquake levelled much of the historic core. Neither half substitutes for the other — give each at least half a day rather than rushing both in one afternoon. If you only have one full day, start in the old city while the morning air is still cool, then shift to the modern centre in the afternoon, when its wide plazas are more pleasant to cross than the tighter lanes near Chorsu.
The Metro Ride and the Museum Choice
Tashkent's metro stations, built from the 1970s onward, were designed as underground showcases with marble, chandeliers, and themed mosaics — photography was restricted for security reasons until 2018, and riding a few stops between Kosmonavtlar and Alisher Navoi stations counts as a sight in its own right, not just transport. For museum time, pick one rather than attempting both: the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan traces the country from antiquity through the Soviet period, while the State Museum of Applied Arts, set in a restored 19th-century residence with courtyard tilework, suits travellers who want one concentrated hour of craft and decorative art instead of a broad survey. Both sit close enough to a metro line that neither decision costs you much backtracking later — the split is about pacing your day, not about missing out on one landmark for good.
Best Season and Timing
Tashkent summers run hot and dry, often past 35°C in July and August, which makes old-city walking uncomfortable by midday. Winters are cold, occasionally snowy, with short daylight that limits sightseeing hours. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) give the most workable mix of mild temperatures, clear skies, and gardens at their best. Public holidays and national celebrations can also shift crowd levels at central squares, so it's worth checking the calendar against your travel dates rather than assuming a quiet visit.
Getting Around Tashkent
The metro crosses the city fastest, linking the old city, centre, and northern districts across separate lines. Ride-hailing apps are widely used and inexpensive relative to Western prices, and are the practical choice for routes the metro doesn't cover well or for late-evening trips. The historic core around Chorsu and Khast Imam is walkable once you're there, but the stretch to Amir Timur Square is better covered by metro or car than on foot. Signage on the metro increasingly includes Latin-script transliteration alongside Cyrillic, but having your destination written down or saved in a translation app still saves time with station staff.
Practical Visit Tips
Dress modestly around Khast Imam and active mosques, and expect restricted access or crowds at working mosques on Friday mornings. Museum opening days and hours shift without much notice, so confirm before building a day around one museum. Entry requirements for Uzbekistan vary by nationality and change periodically, so verify current visa or e-visa rules against official sources before booking rather than assuming a blanket policy applies. Carry a printed or saved copy of your accommodation address, since some sites and transit staff work more comfortably with a written reference than a spoken one.
This guide covers Tashkent travel guide.
02 Where to stayThe best areas, who they suit and what to expect
Choose Tashkent's old city around Chorsu for budget stays close to heritage sites, the city centre around Amir Timur Square for the most walkable and best-located mid-to-high-range hotels, or Yunusabad/Mirzo Ulugbek for modern business-district properties a metro ride from everything else. None of the three is a wrong choice — the trade-off is authenticity and price versus polish and location versus space and business infrastructure.
Old City: Chorsu and Khast Imam Area
Guesthouses and budget hotels cluster near Chorsu Bazaar and the Khast Imam complex, often in converted courtyard houses. This is the cheapest base in Tashkent and puts you inside walking distance of the city's oldest sights, but the accommodation stock skews toward smaller, family-run properties rather than international-standard hotels, and evening dining options thin out earlier than in the centre. Reaching the rest of the city means a metro ride or short taxi — Chorsu has its own metro station, so the connection is direct rather than a workaround. Property counts here are lower than in the centre, which means booking further ahead matters more, especially around national holidays.
City Centre: Amir Timur Square and Broadway
The area around Amir Timur Square, Mustaqillik (Independence) Square, and the pedestrian strip known locally as Broadway holds Tashkent's highest concentration of mid-range and upscale hotels, from international chains to boutique properties. It's the most walkable base for a short visit — restaurants, the Alisher Navoi Opera and Ballet Theatre, and several museums sit within a 15-20 minute walk — but room rates run higher than elsewhere in the city, and the area feels more generic than the old city. It also sits on or near several metro interchange stations, so onward trips to the old city or the northern business districts stay short even at busier hours.
Yunusabad and Mirzo Ulugbek: The Business District
North of the centre, Yunusabad and Mirzo Ulugbek host newer apartment-style hotels and international business properties, including developments near the Tashkent City complex. Streets are wider and quieter, with more modern infrastructure, but the area sits a genuine metro ride — typically 20-25 minutes — from the old city landmarks, so it suits stays built around meetings or longer city relocations more than a two-day sightseeing trip. Restaurant and café options here lean toward everyday local spots rather than the tourist-facing dining clustered near Amir Timur Square, which some longer-stay visitors actually prefer.
How to Choose
If your priority is proximity to heritage sites and lower cost, the old city wins even with fewer polished amenities. If you want to minimise walking distances to major sights and dining without hunting for a taxi, the centre justifies its premium. If you're in Tashkent primarily for work, or want modern apartment-style space for a longer stay, Yunusabad or Mirzo Ulugbek are the more practical base despite the commute into the historic core. Travelers splitting a short trip between two areas — a night or two near Chorsu followed by the centre, for instance — also work well in Tashkent, since no cross-town transfer takes more than about half an hour by metro.
Fit by Traveler Type
Families generally do better in the centre or Yunusabad, where apartment-style rooms and quieter streets outweigh the old city's charm. Couples visiting for a short break tend to prefer the centre for walkability and evening options. Budget travellers are best served by the old city's guesthouses, where costs run noticeably lower. Business travellers should default to Yunusabad or Mirzo Ulugbek, close to modern office and conference facilities, accepting the metro commute to the sights as a fair trade. Solo travellers on a first visit tend to do best in the centre, where the density of hotels, restaurants, and metro connections makes it easiest to find your footing before venturing further out.

03 Plan your tripTiming, transport and practical travel advice
Three full days covers Tashkent's old city, its Soviet-era centre, and one metro-and-museum day without rushing; a fourth day should go to a Chimgan or Charvak day trip rather than a fourth day inside the city, since the core sights are genuinely covered by day three.
Day 1: Old City
Start early at Chorsu Bazaar, before the mid-morning heat and crowds build, then walk roughly 10-15 minutes to the Khast Imam complex. Budget two to three hours across both, since the complex includes several buildings rather than one stop. From there, a short taxi (10 minutes) reaches Kukeldash Madrasah if its courtyard is open; if access is restricted, the exterior and adjacent square are still worth the stop. Spend the afternoon at the State Museum of Applied Arts, a 10-15 minute taxi south — if it's closed for the day, the State Museum of History of Uzbekistan is the practical substitute and covers different ground anyway. End the day back near your accommodation rather than pushing for one more stop — the old city rewards an unhurried pace more than a packed schedule does.
Day 2: City Centre
Devote the morning to Amir Timur Square and the short walk to Independence Square, then continue on foot to Broadway for lunch and browsing — the whole stretch is walkable in under 30 minutes end to end. In the afternoon, visit whichever museum you skipped on Day 1, since both sit within the centre. If evening timing allows, the Alisher Navoi Opera and Ballet Theatre is a short walk from the square and worth checking for a same-day performance schedule. If the schedule doesn't line up, the surrounding fountains and gardens are pleasant enough after dark to close the day without a fixed plan.
Day 3: Metro and Modern Tashkent
Spend the late morning riding a handful of metro stations — Kosmonavtlar to Alisher Navoi is a reasonable stretch — getting off to look at two or three stations rather than the whole network. This pairs naturally with lunch in the centre, since most notable stations sit along the same lines. In the afternoon, head to the newer Tashkent City area or the TV Tower for a different register of the city; if the tower is closed or fully booked, Magic City park nearby is a reasonable alternative for an evening outing. Keep this day loosely scheduled, since it's the most flexible of the three and absorbs delays from earlier days better than Day 1 or Day 2 would.
Day 4 (Optional): Chimgan or Charvak Day Trip
If you have a fourth day, use it outside the city rather than repeating central sights. The Chimgan mountains and Charvak reservoir sit roughly 1.5-2 hours from Tashkent by car, and either makes a full but manageable day trip. This only works as an add-on, not a replacement for city time — arrange transport the evening before, since availability and road conditions vary by season. If weather or timing rules out the mountains, a slower final morning at whichever bazaar or square you rushed through earlier is a reasonable fallback that needs no advance booking.
Logistics Notes
Group Day 1 and Day 2 by geography, not by importance — the old city and the centre are far enough apart that bouncing between them wastes transit time. Keep a half-day buffer somewhere in the first three days for museum closures, prayer-time access limits at mosques, or simple fatigue; Tashkent's sights are close enough together that a missed morning is recoverable the same afternoon. Confirm opening days for both museums before Day 1, since a Monday closure at one shifts which building you visit on which day rather than costing you a stop entirely.
