Before you go
Entry deserves genuine care. Tunisian entry requirements depend on your nationality, on the documents you hold and on your travel date, and they must be confirmed through the official visa service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before you commit to tickets. Rules of this type change quietly and without announcement.

Sousse
Why visit Sousse?
Sousse is a working port city that happens to hold one of the most legible old quarters on this coast, and the practical way to read it is to match each area to what you actually intend to do there. The Medina is the dense historic core. The Ribat of Sousse stands within it as the town's oldest defensive statement, and the Medina of Sousse is itself as much of an attraction as anything held inside it. Boujaafar is the seafront quarter, the strip the city moves to in the evening, where most of the accommodation sits within a short walk of the water. Port El Kantaoui, north of the city proper, is the marina development, and it functions as a destination in its own right rather than as a neighbourhood of Sousse.
The Sousse Archaeological Museum is the one indoor commitment worth planning around deliberately instead of leaving to a spare hour at the end of a day.
Choosing between the three becomes far easier once each area is linked to the sights nearest it. Stay in the Medina and the historic core is on foot. Stay at Boujaafar and the beach day organises itself without any planning at all. Stay at Port El Kantaoui and the marina becomes the default evening while the old city turns into a deliberate excursion. That is the honest trade-off, and it is much easier to make before booking than to correct afterwards.

Tunis
Why visit Tunis?
Tunis is the fullest of the three Tunisian bases in this guide, and it separates cleanly into a historic core, a straight-lined modern grid and a hillside village that behaves like neither. The Medina of Tunis is the old walled city and the reason many visitors extend a stay by a night or two; it is a district to sleep in and a sight in its own right at the same time. Centre Ville is the modern centre, better suited to travellers who want cafes, transport links and a room that is easy to find again after dark. Sidi Bou Said sits above the gulf to the north-east and is the quietest of the three, closer in feel to the coast than to the noise of the capital.
Two visits define the city beyond its streets. The Bardo National Museum is the country's headline collection, and Carthage, on the same northern axis that leads to Sidi Bou Said, is the ancient site most visitors build a half-day around.
Moving between them is the part that needs planning. The national railway operator publishes information for travel within and to Tunis, and it is the reference point for connecting the centre with the northern suburbs rather than assuming a taxi for every leg of every day. Read the three areas as a sequence rather than as alternatives, and the capital stops feeling scattered.
01 Explore the citySights, experiences and the character of the city
Tunis rewards a minimum of two full days: one spent inside the Medina's souks and at the Bardo Museum's Roman mosaic halls, the other riding the TGM light rail out to the Carthage ruins and Sidi Bou Said's blue-and-white lanes. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) keep walking comfortable; midsummer visits are best planned around the hottest midday hours.
The Medina or the Bardo: pick your first half-day
If you only have one morning in central Tunis, the choice is between the Medina and the Bardo Museum, and they pull in different directions. The Medina is a lived-in UNESCO-listed old town of covered souks, the Zitouna Mosque courtyard (viewable from the entrance, non-Muslims do not enter the prayer hall), and workshop alleys selling leather, perfume and copperware — plan on getting pleasantly lost for two to three hours. The Bardo Museum, a former beylical palace a short taxi ride from downtown, holds one of the world's largest collections of Roman-era mosaics under gilded Ottoman ceilings; it needs a similar two to three hours and is closed on Mondays, so check this before building it into a tight schedule. Travellers with only a single day should choose whichever theme — architecture and commerce, or archaeology and art — matters more to them, rather than rushing both.
Carthage and Sidi Bou Said: ruins versus village
The second decision point sits on the coast north of the centre. Carthage spreads its Punic and Roman remains — Byrsa Hill, the Antonine Baths, the Carthage National Museum — across several separate sites a few kilometres apart, so seeing more than two properly takes a half day. Sidi Bou Said, a few stops further on the same rail line, is a single hilltop village of whitewashed, blue-shuttered houses built for a slow wander and a café stop rather than a checklist. Pairing Carthage's ruins in the morning with Sidi Bou Said at golden hour works well logistically, since both sit on the same TGM line and the light suits the village best in late afternoon.
Best season and timing
Late spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking the Medina's uncovered stretches and the exposed Carthage sites. July and August bring strong heat by midday, so an early start or a late-afternoon return works better than a full day outdoors. Winter is mild and quiet, though some coastal spots feel less lively out of season.
Getting around as a visitor
The TGM light rail connects downtown Tunis Marine to Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa in under 40 minutes and is the single most useful line for sightseeing. Within the Medina, everything is on foot — cars cannot enter most of it. Metered taxis are cheap for crossing downtown or reaching the Bardo Museum; confirm the meter is running before you set off.
Practical visit tips
Dress modestly for mosque exteriors and museum interiors, carry small notes for entrance fees, and expect some persistence from shopkeepers in the souks, which is part of the bargaining culture rather than a red flag. Verify current museum days and hours locally before you go, since schedules shift seasonally.
This guide covers Tunis travel guide.
02 Where to stayThe best areas, who they suit and what to expect
Base in the Medina if you want to walk out your door into the old city and don't mind narrow, car-free streets; choose Sidi Bou Said or La Marsa for sea air, café terraces and an easy 30-40 minute TGM commute into town; pick Les Berges du Lac for modern towers, direct airport access and business-trip convenience over historic character.
Three real areas, three trade-offs
The Medina puts you inside the walled old town in a converted dar (traditional courtyard house) or small guesthouse, steps from the souks and the Zitouna Mosque — the trade-off is narrow alleys that no car can enter, meaning luggage means a walk or a porter, and nightlife winds down early. Sidi Bou Said and neighbouring La Marsa, on the northern coast, offer boutique hotels and seafront cafés with a genuinely relaxed pace — the cost is distance: you're 30-40 minutes from downtown by TGM rail or longer by road during rush hour, and Sidi Bou Said itself gets crowded with day-trippers by late morning. Les Berges du Lac (Lac 1 and Lac 2), the reclaimed lakeside business district east of downtown, has international-chain towers, wide roads and easy access to Tunis-Carthage Airport — the trade-off is that it feels corporate and modern rather than Tunisian, with little to walk to after dark.
How to choose between them
If landmark-hopping on foot matters most, the Medina wins despite the logistics. If you'd rather decompress by the sea and don't mind commuting in for sightseeing, Sidi Bou Said or La Marsa fits better — La Marsa in particular has more everyday restaurants and fewer tour groups than Sidi Bou Said itself. If your trip is short, transit-heavy, or built around meetings, Les Berges du Lac removes the guesswork around airport transfers and traffic.
Accommodation by area
The Medina's options run from budget guesthouses to a handful of restored dar properties with courtyard pools, generally small and individually run rather than branded. Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa mix boutique coastal hotels with serviced apartments, priced higher in peak spring and summer months. Les Berges du Lac is dominated by mid-range and upscale international chains built for conference and corporate travel.
Transport from each area
From the Medina, everything downtown is walkable; taxis handle anything further. From Sidi Bou Said or La Marsa, the TGM light rail runs directly to Tunis Marine station downtown, with taxis as backup when trains are crowded. From Les Berges du Lac, taxis and ride-hailing cover the short hop into the centre or out to the airport, since the district isn't on the TGM line.
Who fits where
Families do well in Les Berges du Lac or La Marsa, where space, parking and calmer streets outweigh proximity to landmarks, and where supermarkets and pharmacies are easier to reach than inside the Medina's alleys. Couples get the most atmosphere from the Medina or Sidi Bou Said, trading some convenience for rooftop views and evening strolls through quieter lanes. Budget travellers should look at the Medina, where guesthouse prices undercut the coast and public transport or walking covers most needs without taxis. Business travellers gain the most from Les Berges du Lac's airport proximity, conference-ready hotels and predictable daytime traffic compared with the older, narrower streets closer to the centre.
This guide covers where to stay in Tunis.
03 Plan your tripTiming, transport and practical travel advice
Four days covers Tunis properly: Day 1 in the Medina on foot, Day 2 at the Bardo Museum and downtown Avenue Habib Bourguiba, Day 3 riding the TGM line out to Carthage and finishing at sunset in Sidi Bou Said, and Day 4 kept flexible for La Marsa, a rescheduled Bardo visit, or an early airport transfer.
Day 1: Medina, on foot, no transit needed
Start early at the Zitouna Mosque end of the souks, before the midday crowd and heat build up, and work outward through the covered market alleys — allow the full morning, since distances are short but the pace is slow. Break for lunch inside the Medina rather than walking out to downtown and back. Spend the afternoon on whichever craft souks you skipped (leather, copper, perfume), then exit toward Avenue Habib Bourguiba as things wind down for an early evening walk past the French-colonial facades. No taxi or train is needed all day.
Day 2: Bardo Museum, then downtown
Take a taxi to the Bardo Museum first thing — it opens by mid-morning and the mosaic halls take two to three hours to see properly; go early to beat tour-bus groups. Confirm it's open before you leave, since it's closed on Mondays; if it is, swap this day with Day 3 or use the morning for Belvedere Park and the zoo instead. After the museum, taxi back downtown for a slower afternoon along Avenue Habib Bourguiba and the Ville Nouvelle streets around it, ending with dinner near the clock tower area.
Day 3: Carthage to Sidi Bou Said by rail
This is the one TGM-line day, so sequence it by geography, not by importance. Catch the train from Tunis Marine toward Carthage in the morning and get off at Byrsa Hill first — the hilltop site with the Carthage National Museum takes about ninety minutes. Walk or taxi the short distance to the Antonine Baths for another hour, then get back on the TGM heading further out to Sidi Bou Said. Arrive by mid-afternoon, before the day-trip crowds thin out, and stay through sunset, when the blue-and-white streets are at their best and the worst of the heat has passed. Dinner in the village or one stop back in La Marsa both work.
Day 4: flexible day
Use this day for whatever slipped: a rescheduled Bardo Museum visit if Day 2 hit a closure, a slower La Marsa morning if Sidi Bou Said felt rushed, or simply a lighter half-day before an afternoon flight. If time is genuinely open, La Marsa's corniche and cafés make a calmer bookend than adding a fourth transit-heavy stop, and it sits on the same TGM line for an easy return.
Logistics notes
Buy TGM tickets at the platform machines or windows each ride; it doesn't run on a tap-in pass system citywide. Taxis are the practical choice between the Medina, downtown and the Bardo Museum, since those points aren't on the rail line. Build a 15-20 minute buffer around each TGM connection during peak commuting hours, and confirm site hours locally before each museum stop, since they shift by season.
